George Washington Hotel Wedding: Kristina & Phil
When I became a parent, something shifted. I’ll never forget holding my daughter for the first time in the hospital. The whole world stopped. Now, when I’m at weddings capturing the day alongside the families of those getting married, it takes on a whole new meaning. Kristina and Phil come from such lovely families. When I was at Kristina’s parents home capturing the ‘getting ready’ portion of the day, I knew it was all so special to each person there. She and her parents, her dad, grandparents…everyone. It is so humbling and intimate to see them all interact together. My prayer and hope is that my family experiences look like this as my kids grow and (tear) are married one day….
Here is more from Kristina….
What was your inspiration behind your wedding day?
My inspiration transformed over the year-and-a-half of our engagement. Initially, I knew I wanted it to feel whimsical and romantic, and I thought that meant getting married outside in a garden with flowers everywhere… until we picked August 18th as our date, and we knew it would be too hot to have an outdoor wedding. Once we found our venue, I was able to change up the inspiration a little bit. I still wanted it to feel whimsical, but I knew if I incorporated some vintage pieces, it would mesh well with the location of our wedding which was The George Washington Hotel. I didn’t want to force a theme that did not go well with the venue.
Advice to share with brides planning now?
Our wedding coordinator gave me this great advice when we were picking out the sashes for our chairs. He said not a lot of people think about the colors of their wedding and how they will go with the venue. Our venue had a lot of gold accents, so we went with gold sashes and I also incorporated a lot of gold pieces in the decor. It was something I hadn’t considered when choosing the initial colors. In general, I would tell anyone planning a wedding, to not be afraid to ask for help. It will DEFINITELY become overwhelming, and it’s great if you can have people around you that are willing to help to alleviate some stress off of yourself. And remember to ask nicely and always say thank you.
How did you and your spouse meet?
We met through his younger sister in high school. Phil attended a separate high school from his sister and myself. If it wasn’t for her, we would have never met! We were 15 and 17 when we met, but we didn’t develop feelings (or have a real conversation) until 3 years later around the time I was graduating high school.
Proposal Details! How did it happen? 🙂
We both are in love with the city of Pittsburgh, both born and raised, and we also both attended the University of Pittsburgh at separate campuses. Phil loves the Steelers more than anyone else I have ever met, and we both love to be active and exercise. On March 25, 2017 we went for a bike ride around the city, The Point fountain was our final destination. We ride bikes pretty frequently together, so I wasn’t expecting the proposal. He popped the question as we were facing Heinz Field- The Point fountain was a bit too overcrowded- and I was completely shocked! It was the perfect proposal because it encompassed everything that we love and enjoy as a couple!
What was your favorite memory from your big day?
I have so many! The wonderful and delicious breakfast my aunt prepared for my bridal party, praying with Phil before the ceremony, saying our vows and committing ourselves to one another, seeing the BEAUTIFUL cake for the first time, and dancing the entire night away. But, one of the most personal and emotional moments for me was my Dad’s reaction when he saw me for the first time. His reaction and emotions were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced or seen from him, and in that moment, I could feel how much he loved me.
