We took inspiration from our love of reclaimed spaces. Vincent loves modern and brutalist architecture while I am a fan of organic shapes and colors. The perfect blend of those is the beauty we both see in abandoned buildings and structures that have been reclaimed by nature. Since that idea represented us so much we used it as the basis for all of our design, style, and venue choices.

Find ways to work together as a team with your fiance. Wedding planning is stressful but at the same time being married is also about being a  team, and working together with your spouse is a good way to learn to problem solve and work together through difficult (and expensive) choices. I feel that because Vincent and I worked together on the wedding (literally all the planning activities were split 50/50) that the wedding turned out to be more authentically “us.”

We met during a Japanese Culture Association meeting at the University of Pittsburgh. He was the PR guy and I just came back from my study abroad in Japan.

Being an accountant/ auditor as my day job, I am a slightly risk averse person. I knew that he was going to pop the question, as we bought the ring together, however, I asserted that he propose in a way that was meaningful to the both of us. One of the times I was visiting him, he made me a brunch (100% from scratch) that consisted of spiced whole wheat waffles with a lavender lemon syrup, miso soup, and egg and hand made sausage. All of these foods meant something to us in our relationship. After that he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He was so nervous and thought so much about how he was going to propose that he forgot which finger to put the ring on. But of course, I said yes!

There were so many amazing moments. Definitely the first dances and speeches were emotional and impactful. However, the one moment that truly stands out to both of us was our college friends dancing and singing with us to the Japanese adaptation of Careless Whisper (Dakishimete Jitterbug by Hideki Saijo) and confusing our guests with our “inside joke.” We didn’t think that they would actually participate in it as much as they did!
